RM20 million Federal Highway bike lane upgrade at 43% progress, to be completed in August this year

Federal Highway Bike Lane Upgrade: RM20 Million Project Nearing Completion!

Good news for all you two-wheeled warriors! The much-anticipated RM20 million upgrade for the FT002 Federal Highway motorcycle lane is progressing well and is set to be completed by August this year. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi recently announced that the project is currently 43% done.

Why the Upgrade? Prioritizing Rider Safety

This significant investment, part of Rolling Plan 5 under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12), addresses long-standing safety concerns. With a high volume of motorcyclists using this route, many have been forced onto the main highway lanes, drastically increasing the risk of accidents. The government aims to make the dedicated lane safer and more appealing, encouraging riders to stick to it and reduce the dangers on the main highway.

What's Being Done? Extensive Improvements for a Better Ride

The upgrade covers a massive 48 km in both directions, stretching across 7 km in the Klang district and a substantial 41 km in the Petaling district. Riders can look forward to a host of improvements, including:

  • Road resurfacing for a smoother journey.
  • Essential tunnel repairs.
  • Replacement of old road barriers.
  • Repairs to bridge railings for enhanced safety.
  • Trimming of trees to improve visibility.
  • Installation of clearer signboards and warning signs.

Tackling Flash Floods and Boosting Night Visibility

A crucial part of the current work focuses on drainage and drain upgrading. This is great news, as several "black spots" along the lane are notorious for flash floods during monsoon season, posing a serious threat to riders. Additionally, a separate allocation of RM6 million has been set aside for installing integrated solar LED street lights. This means better visibility and enhanced safety for those riding at night, which is a major win for daily commuters.

"We hope this will help reduce accidents and fatalities involving motorcyclists."

A Safer Future for Malaysian Motorcyclists

The government is optimistic that once these comprehensive upgrades are complete, more motorcyclists will confidently use the dedicated lane, steering clear of the hazardous main highway sections. Beyond this project, the Works Ministry has already identified other motorcycle lanes in urban areas that are slated for future upgrading works. This initiative is a positive step towards ensuring safer roads and reducing the alarming rate of accidents and fatalities among motorcyclists in Malaysia. Let's hope all riders play their part by utilizing these improved facilities!
